Internet Works Brings Middle Tech to Capitol Hill, Advocating for Right-sized Tech Policy

[Washington, D.C.] – [March 06, 2025] – Yesterday, Internet Works and its membership had a clear message for Members of Congress and staff in meetings on Capitol Hill: in order to preserve the internet as a space of limitless opportunity, tech policy must be right-sized for “Middle Tech” companies.  Internet Works, the leading tech trade association that does not represent big tech, represents over 20 Middle Tech companies.  Millions of Americans rely on these online platforms to grow small businesses, find jobs, book vacations, connect with neighbors, and shop online.

Throughout their lobby day, Internet Works met with bipartisan, bicameral congressional offices to ensure that tech policy debates account for the full spectrum of the digital economy, not just its largest players.

“The technology industry is not a monolith, and it is critical that legislative discussions on tech policy consider the unique strengths, challenges, and contributions of Middle Tech.  Through our meetings today, our member companies gave Congress an inside look on how policies they enact today will shape the internet tomorrow,” said Peter Chandler, Executive Director of Internet Works.

During these meetings with lawmakers, Internet Works members emphasized the importance of right-sizing policy in 5 key areas:

  • Intermediary Liability (Section 230)
  • Content moderation, Trust, and Safety
  • Privacy and Data Security
  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Competition

As much of the policy discussion in recent years has focused on Big Tech, legislative action must carefully consider how broad one-size-fits-all regulations disproportionately affect Middle Tech companies.  Internet Works is committed to serving as a trusted resource for lawmakers in efforts to advance thoughtful tech policy that can drive innovation, promote small business growth, and ensure a trusted and safer online environment for all users.

Internet Works’ member companies include: Automattic, Discord, Dropbox, Ebay, Etsy, Eventbrite, Expedia Group, Glassdoor, Indeed, Intuit, Nextdoor, Patreon, Pinterest, Reddit, Roblox, Scribd, Tripadvisor, Trustpilot, Vimeo, Yahoo, and Yelp.
