Washington, D.C., April 28, 2025 — Internet Works, the trade association representing Middle Tech companies, applauds the passage of the TAKE IT DOWN Act that the U.S. House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved today. After passing the Senate unanimously in February, the legislation now advances to President Donald Trump’s desk for his signature.
“Internet Works member companies take their responsibility to protect users of all ages extremely seriously, and we remain committed to working with lawmakers to craft legislation that fosters trust and promotes safety online,” said Peter Chandler, Executive Director of Internet Works. “It is also our priority to preserve a vibrant internet ecosystem where small and medium-sized businesses can thrive. We are proud to support the TAKE IT DOWN Act, a bill that would empower victims to remove NCII materials from the Internet and end the cycle of victimization by those who publish this heinous content.”
The Tools to Address Known Exploitation by Immobilizing Technological Deepfakes on Websites and Networks (TAKE IT DOWN) Act (H.R. 633) provides critical protections for victims of NCII, including AI-generated images. The legislation criminalizes the distribution of this material and requires websites to establish processes for removing or disabling such content.
As part of its broader commitment to online safety, Internet Works previously endorsed the REPORT Act, which became law in 2024. The law makes statutory changes related to the reporting of crimes involving the online sexual exploitation of children, increases penalties for non-compliant providers, and limits liability for vendors and for those who self-report. Additionally, Internet Works continues to support the Invest in Child Safety Act to address the systemic underfunding and coordination challenges in combating child sexual abuse material online.
Internet Works’ member companies include: Automattic, Discord, Dropbox, eBay, Etsy, Eventbrite, Expedia Group, Glassdoor, Indeed, Intuit, Nextdoor, Patreon, Pinterest, Reddit, Roblox, Scribd, Tripadvisor, Trustpilot, Vimeo, Yahoo, and Yelp.
