[Washington, D.C.] – [June 1, 2026] – Today, Internet Works Executive Director Peter Chandler issued the following statement ahead of the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s hearing on the SECURE Data Act:
“Americans deserve strong, consistent privacy protections no matter where they live. That means ensuring individuals have meaningful rights over their personal data and that American companies have the uniform standards necessary to protect those rights—including the ability to access, correct, delete, and port their information, and to opt out of certain data processing.”
“A clear, uniform federal standard would promote a more competitive and dynamic digital economy. By replacing inconsistent state requirements with a single set of rules, Congress can help ensure that privacy protections do not inadvertently advantage the biggest tech companies, and instead enable Middle Tech companies to continue developing and scaling innovative products and services in a competitive landscape.”
“The Middle Tech companies that comprise Internet Works support a comprehensive national privacy framework that delivers these protections more effectively than the current patchwork of state laws. Today’s fragmented approach imposes significant compliance burdens on small and medium-sized Internet companies and the small businesses that depend on them—diverting time and resources away from serving customers and driving innovation.”
“The SECURE Data Act represents a meaningful step toward ensuring all Americans’ have fundamental privacy protections no matter where they live while preserving a dynamic digital economy, and we commend Rep. John Joyce (R-PA) and E&C Committee Chair Brett Guthrie (R-KY) for their leadership on this issue. Internet Works looks forward to working with lawmakers on both sides of the aisle to advance a strong, balanced federal privacy law that protects consumers while fostering innovation and competition.”
